Todd Snider "Time As We Know It: The Songs of Jerry Jeff Walker" - 2012 LP

Jerry Jeff Walker might have been the one to do it....JJW was the one that sent me exploring....that got me into Waylon....that made me wanna hear Buck Owens....I remember screaming "Red Neck Mother" at the top of my lungs the first time I got typsy....I remember blasting "Takin' It As It Comes" driving around the Hill Country in Tejas searching for game and bass fishin'.....Jerry Jeff was our anthem....our institution...and we were/are devoted followers....He changed my life in high school.  Apparently he had an impact on Todd Snider as well.  Snider's quirky/folk/wink with one eye stare down with the other-style is the perfect candidate to cover Jerry Jeff's impressive cataloge....Just as Phosphorescent did justice to Wille Nelson...Snider pays perfect homage to an American Legend:

Death Grips "The Money $tore" - 2012 LP

Did you see that spark in the sky last night? It wasn't lightning....It wasn't a shooting star...Last night a spaceship landed...As a matter of fact it was a spaceship from the fooooture...The ground shook and trembled....smoke was er'where....The spacship hatch slammed to the grOUnd...A mad Nigerian and two honkies exited....They said their name was Death Grips and they are from the planet Sacramento...I've never heard anything like this album.  It's an unreal unique blend of multiple genres....to the point that it paves its own.....it's not rap/it's not rock/it's kinda horror-core.....shit man...it's not for all but it is damn good....get your hardcore weird on:

Best Coast "The Only Place" - 2012 LP

My commute to work is the Venice Boardwalk.  No joke.  I pass all of the rollerblading guitarist, silver painted dudes, jugglers, and dozens of other artists every single day. Early this morning I hopped on my cruiser and headed towards the beach.  There might not be a more fitting album than Best Coast to today's commute (well, Pet Sounds of course).  Bethany Cosentino is effing hot man.....and she can sing.  Apparently she has grown up as well....Best Coast' new album strays away from the fuzzed out geeeetars but keeps the sunny SoCal Vibe and cleans up.....This Best Coast sounds more crisp and has more layered vox....This Best Coast sings about being a better person and growing.....about doing the right thing after maybe a few mishaps....

Horse Feathers "Cynic's New Year" - 2012 LP

Okay, great overlooked (well mainstream overlooked, which who gives a shit about the that) acoustic/chill/deep/introspective artists?...Elliot Smith?..duh....Nick Drake? Oh hell yes, Pink Moon is on all-time lists (mine included). Now cut 30 yrs later....The acoustic genre has further developed....there's freak folk/avant acoustic/folktronic....Horse Feathers are just plain and simple good musack....No matter what label you wanna stick on them these Portland, Oregon dudes are consistent.....this album is soooooo good from Kill Rock Stars Records:
