    Deerhunter "Monomania" - 2013 LP

Before you go to LACMA there's a couple things to do.  The first thing is to avoid the internet and televsion all day prior to your visit.  The second is go to Molly Malone's and have a Jameson neat with a Black and Tan back.  Once you've walked through the current exhibition showing make your way to the second floor of the Ahmanson Building.  On the east wall is a painting titled "The Room".  The painting is by master, Philip Guston.  It's a large painting and it is spectacular.  At first glance the painting looks simple.  Then colors begin to unfold.  Shapes and motions from a palette knife begin to test the viewer.  The painting is subtle but aggressive.  It has great violence.  Deerhunter's "Monomania" is their most provocative album to date.  Bradford Cox confronts the listener.  Shoves him a bit in a great way.  After a few listens you might want to repeat the second step a few times:

Hookworms "Pearl Mystic" - 2013 LP

I'm ready to write again.  A good streak can fill your veins.  A good wave can take you in new directions.  After weeks of listening to a bunch of well respected 'indie bands' new albums.....I was numb....They all started to sound the same.   My art suffered.   For the first time ever I didn't 'feel' like painting.  So I did what I always do.  Grow a beard and get drunk for a week.  Then.....like a swift kick in the nuts.....an ice water bath.....Hookworms snapped me out of it.....The rush was back.  The excitement of new creativity.  The accomplishment of finished projects.....I shaved, ate kale, did sit-ups, and got some goddamn sun on my face.  Thank you Hookworms.
