If you're musical cognition came into fruition in the 90s then you know Mark Lanegan.  If you were like me wearing ripped flannel shirts with strategically placed holes.......you listened to A LOT of the following: Nirvana, Alice in Chains, STP, Pearl Jam, Rage, and if you dug a little deeper you found Mudhoney and Screaming Trees.  Lanegan formed Screaming Trees and made is mark in the grunge scene.
